Feeling completely burned out? It happens to the best of us. Call upon these stress management tips the next time you’re under pressure.
1. Make Time for Exercise
Of all the stress management tips, working out might be one of the most essential. This is because it helps to keep your stress levels low and your body healthy. It shifts your focus away from work and onto something that’s not as stressful, but just as worthwhile. So you’re still challenging your mind (and your body!), but giving yourself the time away from a pressure-packed situation. It doesn’t have to be a major workout, either. Taking a few minutes to stretch throughout the day or breaking for 20 minutes to walk your dog will still work wonders. Exercising is one of the most effective ways to prevent burnout.
2. Get a Massage
Yup. We just gave you an excuse to book a nice 30 or 60-minute massage. You can thank us later. In all seriousness, there are few better ways to relieve stress than with massage. And with all of the daily deals sites popular today, finding an affordable massage at a local spa is easy. If you can afford it, make massages a regular part of your routine for managing stress.
3. Do Something Mundane
Whenever I’m stuck at the computer, stressing about words that just aren’t being written, I take a quick break to do something boring – like wash the dishes. Those few minutes standing at the kitchen are just what I need to prevent burnout. Why? Because my mind can completely zone out while I’m doing something that’s 100 percent easy. When managing stress, little acts can go a long way.
4. Only Do Your Job
I know, as a small business owner your job is pretty much everything. But if you hired employees remember that you hired them for a reason. Trust people to do their job and don’t get more involved than you have to. Doing so will just load more pressure on your shoulders, increasing the chance of burnout.
5. Sit Quietly
Also known as meditation – but I know that word can intimidate some people. Sometimes all you need for managing stress is just a few moments of silence. Turn off all background noise, sit in a comfortable position and zone out for a bit. Focus on your breathing and nothing more. It can be very liberating!
6. Turn Up the Music
Sitting quietly not working for you? First, make sure you’re alone. Then, blast your favorite song as loud as you possibly can and just dance like an idiot. Not only are you exerting pent-up negative energy, but you’re also bound to make yourself laugh. And laughing is key to managing stress. Win-win.
7. Take a Nap
Admittedly, this is one of my favorite ways to relieve stress. I’m not giving you a hall pass to sleep away the rest of a Wednesday afternoon, but shutting down for a 20-minute catnap on a hot afternoon is a great way to reboot. Just make sure to set that alarm and don’t oversleep!
